Since horses were first domesticated, man has taken pride in having such an ideal partner for both work and leisure, which gives so much and asks for so little in return. Understanding these wonderful animals a little more can only add to our enjoyment of their presence in our lives.

I had asked my daughter to put together another review (thinking she'd pick up one of the actual review books...) and she picked up this one.  She's obsessed with horses and she can read this book for long periods of time.  Much of it is just looking at the horses, but she did read the book, eager to learn everything she could about the horses.  I do agree that it's great photos and is quite interesting if you are into horses.
Whether you are or not, you may find my daughter's review very entertaining.

An 8 year old's POV:


I really, really, really love this book.  It tells us all about horses and ponies.  It tells us about the different kinds of horses and ponies and where they live.  It tells us their nature, like if they are gentle and good for kids.  It has good pictures.  Some of the pictures have baby foals.

Some of them look funny.  Some of them look like a dalmation. They are called a Knabstrup.  My favorite is the Camargue that live in France and are gray (but look white).  They have a yellow mane and tail.

Some of the horses are dirty and some are shiny.  Some have braided manes and some have funny haircuts.  The Fresian horse is from the Netherlands and has a wavy mane and tail and is super shiny.

Some horses are work horses and they have shorter legs and necks and bigger bodies and heads.  Some horses are for riding and they have longer legs usually.  The Noriker is a heavy horse, which is a work horse.  It is from Austria and has a white wavy mane and is a liver chestnut which is a dark brown color.  It is a pretty horse.

I really love white horses.  And shiny horses.  I like horses that have a gentle trot.

I like riding horses at riding lessons.  My horses name is Pepper.  He is white with gray dots.  I like learning all about horses.  When I grow up I want to train horses and teach people how to ride horses.  So I need learn all about them and the different kinds.

My daughter actually went to horse spa camp this week.  This isn't Pepper, that she mentions above, but the pony Buttons.  She picked Buttons because they were doing their hair and braiding their manes and tails.  She couldn't reach Pepper's mane without a stool so she picked Buttons instead.  I couldn't get a real great picture, but this shows some of the braids! She had a great time!
