I really enjoy middle grade fantasy and it's usually great in audiobook form. Very fast paced and full of action, it holds my attention the entire time. That was definitely the case with this one! I loved the setting of India and the fantasy elements were absolutely amazing!When Zoe Guire goes along on her mom's business trip to India, things get very weird, very quickly. An elephant god speaks to her from the bottom of a swimming pool... She and her classmate Zak get locked in a trunk and shipped off to a strange city near the foothills of the Himalayas... and a crazy snake charmer tells them they've been chosen to protect a mythical creature called the Ghost Leopard from an ancient evil that wants to take over the world.
As they travel deeper into the majestic mountains known as the Realm of the Gods, things get even weirder. If she and Zak want to make it back to their parents, they're going to have to tap into powers they never knew existed.
Because if they don't, things will never be the same for any of us ever again.
While Zoe had a hard time accepting the magic around her, that she saw time and time again, she did grow as a character and by the end I knew I liked her a lot. Zak was a bit annoying in the first few chapters (that's how he was suppose to be) but by the time the adventure really took off I found myself liking him a lot. He's not afraid of a little adventure, and is maybe a little too quick to jump in with both feet, but in this case it ended up being a good thing.
The audio narration was great. Bailey Carlson narrated and she did the voices great. They were easy to differentiate, I always knew who was talking. And she nailed the Indian accents, it was perfect! I think that for this book she was the perfect choice.
This was a fun ride with great fantasy elements, truly scary bad guys, great adventure, and an amazing setting. I very highly recommend to fans of middle grade fantasy!

DeleteI don't read much MG and I've only ever listened to one (The Apothecary by Maile Meloy, loved it!), but my kid has started school and she's growing up so fast, so it's time to change that.

Great review.
I didn't read much middle grade until my daughter started getting to the age where she'd enjoy it. It's surprising how the range is, some MG is good for younger readers and others I think are almost more YA. Reading them myself gives me an idea of what would work for her. My daughter scares easily, so this one would be better for when she's more like 10 or 11, so a couple years yet.

ReplyDeleteThis sounds really good I've never listened to an MG on audio and I would have been concerned that the narrator would not sound like kids - I like them to sound like the one telling the story - but both you and Amy said they did a really good job! It sounds liek a super fun adventure with great characters once you get to know them! :)

It does sound like things get weird in this book. What crazy sounding situations-they would definitely freak me out now, let alone when I was that age!
