When Jules lands a role on a new TV show, she gets stuck choosing between taking part in her class moving up ceremony at school and shooting a sitcom. And that's only half the drama!
With a quiet best friend who won't ever hoot and holler and an ex-best friend who may be moving to the burbs, Jules's insides are all mixed-up. She'll need a little bit of nerve and a whole lot of pizzazz if she wants to make it through the last month of second grade without turning into a drama queen!
This is definitely a younger middle grade book and was perfect for my 8 year old daughter. It's one she could have easily read on her own, but I did read it aloud.
I thought it was a fun one to read aloud as Jules is a fun character and very dramatic. She really felt like a real 2nd grader and she felt genuine to me. Her personality was great and my daughter thought she was a lot of fun.
We hadn't read the first book and there were things referenced in this from the first so it would have been nice to have read it, however it wasn't a huge issue and didn't ruin our enjoyment of the book.
We particularly liked getting to see what's it's like becoming a star. Jules might not be famous yet, but she's starting her acting career and kind of finding her way. We go with her for a show that she's going to be in and are there with her as she experiences doubts and frustrations. And we see her good side and her bad side. I loved that her family was so great with her mood swings and how they would calm her down when she was stressing out.
The book had cute illustrations throughout. We had an unfinished edition, but I can imagine the final illustrations were probably lovely.
This is the perfect book for 2nd-5th grade girls (I would personally recommend 2nd and 3rd as the perfect age).
I haven't heard of this one but main character sounds really great :) I hope that once you'll read (if you already haven't) Wonder by R.J.Palacio to your kid :) Maybe when she gets a bit older :) Great review.
ReplyDeleteI think one of my sister's friends read this one just recently- if not, the cover looks really similar. Jules seems like a hopeful MC with big dreams which is perfect for children to read as they would relate to her easily.
