Once Upon a Read-a-Thon Suggested Reads

The Once Upon a Read-a-Thon is nearly upon us! Each year we do a suggested reads post to suggest a few books WE think are perfect for a read-a-thon.  For me these are books that are fast and easy to read.  Books that hold my attention the entire time and that I can read quickly.

I ALWAYS suggest Lisa Schroeder.  Any one of her books is great, but her verse novels you can read in literally an hour or two.  But this year she had her first YA non-verse novel come out and it actually is a fast read too.  Not AS fast as a verse novel, of course, but it was easy to read and I read through it in one sitting.  Falling for You isn't necassarily light and fun (it deals with some heavy stuff) but it's still a very fast read and it's incredible.

The next one I'm recommending is another YA contemp.  This book doesn't really deal with heavy issues, but it deals with some regular teenage stuff.  The thing is, this book was INCREDIBLE.  One of the best I've read this year.  It's also a fast read that I cruised through in no time at all.

Openly Straight by Bill Konigsberg, read it!

Those of you who enjoy fantasy but maybe want something faster to read during the read-a-thon should definitely pick up The Mist-Torn Witches by Barb Hendee.

Another fantasy, this time YA, that's a fast read (and fun!) is Poison by Bridget Zinn.  This book is ADORABLE, and so fun!

If you're looking for an urban fantasy to read I highly recommend Generation V by M.L. Brennan.  It's a fast read for a UF book and it's got such great characters and puts a unique spin on vampires.

I like light and fun YA contemporary books, and no one does it better than Leila Sales!  Past Perfect is great, as is Mostly Good Girls.  I recommend both, though I think Past Perfect is my fav of the two.

 

Blaze (or love in the time of supervillains) by Laurie Boyle Crompton is a book that manages to balance HILARIOUS with serious extremely well.  I did lots of laughing while reading this, but I also cried a bit.  It's a super fast read that you won't want to put down until you finish.

Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock is another YA contemp that really had me in giggles.  It also deals with some real life issues, but nothing too serious to damper the happy and hilarious moments. 

Now I love road trip books so I can't end this post without recommending one.  How My Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski isn't all fun and games, but it's a great read and I had plenty of LOL moments.

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon Recommended Reading

The Once Upon a Read-a-Thon is coming up (if you haven't signed up yet, you better do so! We're giving away a $60 gift card to one participant!) and we thought a recommended reading list was in order.  If you'd like to join in be sure to do your then link it below! In case you haven't heard yet, the Once Upon a Read-a-Thon is hosted by Lori at Pure Imagination, Angela at Reading Angel and myself.  It runs from July 9th to the 11th.
I enjoy reading shorter books for read-a-thons because then I feel like I get a lot more read.  Verse books are some that fit the bill perfectly.  I usually recommend Lisa Schroeder's books, they are super fast and completely amazing.  But because I've recommended her for the past two years I won't list her this time around (but you should still read her books!).
First I'm going to recommend Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer.  This is a fast read and is a lighter tone, which I like for read-a-thon's.

Something Like Normal by Trish Dollar was a fantastic read!  It has a male narrator, which I always think is fun.  This book is good because it's very fast, it has a serious tone, but yet, it's not heavy reading.  It's easy to cruise through it in no time at all.

Team Human by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan is very light and funny and is one that I flew through in no time at all!

Last year I recommended Moonglass by Jessi Kirby cause it was GORGEOUS writing and was a super fast read.  I still recommend it, but she has a new one out that is a must read as well and is also very fast paced. In Honor by Jessi Kirby

The Secret Year by Jennifer Hubbard is a little older than these new releases but is just as good!  It also has a male narrator and it's one that I flew through in a very short time.

I can't go without listing some dystopian books.  Generally dystopia is heavier reading, but Eve and Once are super fast.  Both of them I read in only a few hours each.  And I really liked them.  If you're in the mood for dystopia, this is a great series to pick for the read a thon.Eve & Once by Anna Carey

Recommended Reading for the Once Upon a Readathon

Hello all my lovely readers, the Once Upon a Readathon is nearly upon us and it's time for doing some recommended reading posts for all of you!  Today I'm recommending a few books, tomorrow is Angela at Reading Angel and Friday Lori at Pure Imagination will post her recommendations.  Are you all signed up for the Readathon?  Well if your not you'd better get on that!  It starts next Monday and runs through Wednesday.  Go sign up HERE.  

There are a couple books that came out recently that I LOVED and have to mention.

The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder is in verse and only takes about an hour to read.  All her books are wonderful but for now I'm going to recommend this one. It takes place at the beach and is a wonderful and romantic perfect summer read.  You can find it on Goodreads HERE.  

The next book I'm going to suggest is not in verse but it took me less then a day to read (that's a normal day, you know, caring for kids, etc).  It sucks you in and it's impossible to put down until you finish.  It's A Need So Beautiful by Suzanne Young.  You can find it on Goodreads HERE.

This next one is another one that is a perfect summer read.  It takes place on a beach and has characters that I just thought were over the top amazing.  It's Moonglass by Jessi Kirby.  You can find it on Goodreads HERE.  

Another YA that was fast and has a bit of a different theme from these others I've mentioned is Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fisher.  You can find it on Goodreads HERE. 

A few adult books that were pretty fast reads that I LOVED were Hounded by Kevin Hearne,  Dead Girls are Easy by Terri Garey, and Attachments by Rainbow Rowell.

Dead Until Dark (Original MM Art) (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood) by Charlaine Harris. All of the Sookie books are fast reads.
