Reading Habits
I first saw this on my friend Lori's blog, Pure Imagination, and thought it looked like fun. I've since seen it around more.
I decided to share too as I'm loving learning about all these other bloggers and hopefully some may be interested in learning a bit more about me!
Do you snack while you read? If so, favourite reading snack:
I don't usually snack at all actually. But I do read while I eat almost 100% of the time. I'm sitting at the table though.
What is your favourite drink while reading?
I drink coffee in the morning but the rest of the day I don't usually carry a drink around. I get a drink of water and usually drink it while standing in the kitchen.
Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
It horrifies me. Now, if I were to get a book from the author full of the authors notes, now that would be cool! But I could never do it. Maybe in an old textbook that's at the end of it's life or something.
How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?
Bookmarks mostly. I have them all over the house but my children like to destroy them so often I have a scrap of paper, kleenex or something similar stuck in there. I will occasionally dog-ear if it's an old paperback that's already seen a good long life and is looking pretty tired. Only if I own it though.
Fiction, non-fiction, or both?
Fiction. I rarely read non-fiction. Just cookbooks and stuff.
Are you a person who tends to read to the end of a chapter, or can you stop anywhere?
I tend to use "I need to finish my chapter" as an excuse but in reality it depends on the book. If it's a book with cliffhangers at the end of every chapter then I don't set it down at the end of a chapter. I also have two kids so I get so many interruptions that I rarely have a choice.
Are you the type of person to throw a book across the room or on the floor if the author irritates you?
No. I don't recall ever throwing a book. Maybe slamming it shut but that's about it.
If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop and look it up right away?
No. I don't remember ever looking up a word. I either understand or I figure it out by reading the rest of the paragraph.
What are you currently reading?
Avalon Revisited by O.M. Grey. It's an adult paranormal Steampunk and I'm loving it!
What is the last book you bought?
It's books. Not book. Avalon Revisited, Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver, Night Shift by Lilith Saintcrow, and Magic in the Blood and Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk. Might have been more but they haven't arrived yet and I don't remember (is that sad, or what?!). That's the last of my buying for a very long time though. I'm now saving for BEA next year.
Are you the type of person that reads one book at a time, or can you read more than one?
One at a time. If I can't get into a book I may set it aside for another and come back to it later.
Do you have a favourite time/place to read?
I read all day with lots of interruptions. I don't really get any quiet time except on Tuesdays at work. That client has a nice quiet house and I can get a lot read in the few hours I'm there.
I also read all over my house. Pretty much just follow the kids around.
Do you prefer series books or stand alones?
I guess I have to say series. Trilogies are the perfect length actually. But when I love a character I like to continue to see them. Some series could go on forever and I'd be happy. Sookie Stackhouse is one and Savannah Vampires by Raven Hart is another.
Is there a specific book or author you find yourself recommending over and over?
Yes. Kushiels Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey is my all time favorite. But it's VERY adult so I only have so many people to recommend it to. Savannah Vampires by Raven Hart is another but is also very adult and so I have to be selective in who I recommend them to.
All of Maggie Stiefvater's books, all of them, are some I tell EVERYONE about.
How do you organize your books? (by genre, title, author's last name, etc.)
My books are organized in different ways. I have some super high shelves which hold books I've read and won't be trying to get everyone else to read. Then I have a bookshelf in the family room which is full of my books 'next to be read'. I have a bookshelf in the living room with non fiction and historical fiction. I have a shelf in the hall with my YA books. And then I have a bookshelf in my bedroom with my series books that I'm still working through or plan to loan out. I have books on the entertainment center in the bedroom with books that I have listed on paperbackswap. I also have books in a few other areas, but that's where most of them are. I usually put them by size and with other books of the same author and/or series.
